CORE was founded in 1999 by Deb Roepke, and in 2000 partnered with Fairlington Presbyterian Church in Alexandria to open the first computer classroom and refurbishment lab. Over the next 8 years, CORE grew from a small class of five students to perennially graduating four classes – improving the lives of 48 students every six months, 96 per year. Each graduating class offered more success for students and had an even greater impact on their families and our community.
In 2008, we partnered with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia to offer a class at James Lee Community Center in Falls Church, which is now a permanent class site. In January 2010, CORE began offering classes at a third site, the Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax County.
Never leaving a stone unturned, CORE has continued to add locations and provide more access to the program, expanding further west to our first Herndon site in 2011, the Herndon United Methodist Church. In 2013 we opened a class in Alexandria South County, at the Gum Springs Community Center. CORE also partnered with Northern VA Community College to provide students with assistance during the NVCC co-enrollment process and financial aid applications where they can earn seven college credits for completing the CORE program.
In 2015, CORE moved its headquarters from Alexandria to Bailey’s Crossroads in Falls Church, a dedicated site with 2 computer labs, offices and an additional workshop classroom to better serve CORE clients. Come by and visit our new space! ► Locations »
